ANOTHER TYPO
You know what
they say about
those Navajo weavers?
Or maybe Persian? Chinese?
Some nimble-fingered other. Anyway,
they say they make
mistakes on purpose.
Yeah, misplace one thread
in every rug, so's not
to piss the gods off
by presuming
to aspire
to perfection.
Me, I've never had
that problem.
One imperfection
after another
without even trying.
No competition here --
the gods must love me.
AT THE DEMONSTRATION
A hero of some older battlefield,
Surveys the park in which we congregate
To speak against, and for, our country's guns.
The camouflage-clad children of the hawks
And tie-dyed, tofu-fed dove kids converge
To swarm a chunk of history: a face
In granite bas-relief, some words & dates.
They clamber on the general, we unfurl
Twin US flags. The antis and the pros
Alike lay claim to these stripes, to these stars.
We take our places on the green -- left, right --
Hold up our banners: Honk If You Support. . . .
Both sides fly flags; the traffic passing there
Can barely guess which views they're honking for.
But honk they do, we cheer, wave red-white-blue,
Live one more day without a civil war. |
