jesus

i dreamed i was jesus
floating like a log out to sea

i dreamed i was jesus
the hands of whores caressing my thighs

i dreamed i was jesus
with amnesia in a white desert, cold, barren

i dreamed i was jesus
broadcasting a monday night football game
from a pit of snakes

i dreamed i was jesus
and stood as the sentinel for a morphine-induced crowd

i dreamed i was jesus
australia was my spawn

i dreamed i was jesus the greenskeeper
at a private club in carmel or perhaps chesapeake

i dreamed i was jesus
of all elvis impersonators

i dreamed i was jesus
in a santa claus suit telling dirty jokes
to salvation army bellringers
christ, i laughed as if the weight of the cross
or this damn sack of toys had been taken from my shoulder

i dreamed i was jesus
leader of the black parade

i dreamed i was jesus
and heard marauding armies chant my name

i dreamed i was jesus
with a charles manson swastika carved into my forehead
and a musician's blister on my finger

i dreamed i was jesus the altar boy
paying homage to myself

i dreamed i was jesus the pornographer
adoring flesh hammer

i dreamed i was jesus
my mother, a drunk beauty
and dad, all wrong

i dreamed i was jesus
gnawing on the bones of jeffrey dahmer

i dreamed i was jesus
as a young girl with freckles sprinkled
on her cheeks

i dreamed i was jesus
a rooster in the hen house
a grey ghost in a foxhole

i dreamed i was jesus
on a weekend binge
afraid to take the nails
shouldn't i be allowed to douse my sins in spirits instead?

i dreamed i was jesus in tight red spandex
with a pitchfork and no last name

i dreamed i was jesus
drinking wine from the upturned
skulls of our ancestors

i dreamed i was jesus
looking down from my bloody crucifix
and laughing

i dreamed i was jesus
slowly nodding out in a booth
at an all-night diner
when a waitress nudged my shoulder
i awoke
grunted
and forgave no one
