skipper

smokes
drinks
studies the forms
drinks
smokes
takes 30 to 1

red face callous hard nose
backwoods factory boy
carries his bank account
bound with a rubber band
"i can change anything but your name"

yeah, so easy going
it's hard not knowing
when you're a 59-year-old week-to-weeker

filterless tobacco dangles from his lip
as he tops off a "fill'er up!"
and deeply inhales mixed fumes

on slow warm days he sits back
between pumps
as ghosts of '78 return from the railroad tracks
his car stalled on the crossing
so drunk he thought he'd forgotten his keys
and stumbled out on the dark road
cursing through an ill-fated search

when a train approached
he was nearly a half mile away

the smashed buick he could accept
but his passed out drinking buddy
well, he'd have to haul that sin
to marble stone
his roads now have become sidewalks

he smokes
steals a nip
studies the forms
calls in a long shot
"can't make any real money betting the favorites"
he confesses to his boss's customers
